Losing Gracefully
Well, it looks like Ohio cannot be challenged. The spread of votes between the President and Senator John Forbes Kerry (136,221) seems to be close to the number of provisional ballots (~140,000). All provisional ballots would have to be verified for eligible voters and all would have to be for Kerry. Even if 97% were validated and counted for Kerry, it won't be enough.
It also looks like the veterans came through for Bush in droves.
For Senator Kerry, this loss will wound him more than any of the 3 bandaids he received in Vietnam. He's been shaping his whole life around someday winning the presidency. Someday ain't today. The loss will surely crush him. (However, it will be nothing like the wounds he created during the Winter Soldier hearings.)
Sometimes, losing can define a man as much as winning. Al Gore nearly lost his mind. Bob Dole did not and went on to support his wife's successful political ambitions. In many cases, losing can make you a better person. I would like to see John Kerry accept his loss and move forward. I hope he can grow from this. As I've said before, sometimes you have to break something to fix it. This loss may break John Kerry. I hope he will now put America's best interests first instead of saying/doing whatever he thinks will get him elected. There's a war to fight and terrorists to kill. Let's get to it.
I said this on Tuesday: If John Kerry is NOT elected President, I sincerely hope that he follows through on his promises for a stronger America in the Senate. So far, he hasn't done crap as a Senator to make us stronger.
Good luck, Senator, and don't forget your promise.
Update 10:30AM: Kerry just conceded.
