The Media's Attention Span
The media will be focused on this Abu Ghraib Prison scandal for quite awhile now. It's already taken attention off of LtCol. Strobl's account of Taking Chance. He was supposed to be on a variety of news programs but has been preempted several times by "more important" developments.
The story that I posted today about Captain Brian Chontosh is another example of the media missing a great story. Seriously, this story of Chontosh and his Marines (several others were awarded the Navy Cross and other medals for that fight) should be on the major netowrks nightly newscasts. These stories about Marines pressing on even though wounded several times should be featured.
No one will see this story about one of the most famous Pararescue Airmen in history. One of my mentors was a PJ and I worked with them for a few years. There is no unit tougher than the PJs.
But instead, we'll see some story about a dumbass Private who was a clerk at a prison and how she's being unfairly punished and BTW she's pregnant. Big whatever. Throw the book at her (overhanded fast-pitch style) and everyone involved. The real story here is that she might be responsible for getting more Americans killed. Period.
Now for some good news: At least one paper - The Free Lance-Star of Fredericksburg, VA - picked up the Taking Chance story and didn't edit out all of the positives. In fact, Frederickburg.com published the Colonel's story as is - no edits.
