One Last Act
I don't have the words to express what it must take for a man to die with honor, dignity, and courage when his captor's every action and purpose is to strip those things away. I'll leave it to George Edward Woodbury.
Italy hails "hero" murdered hostage
By Crispian Balmer
<...> Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said a video recording of the killing showed that Quattrocchi was hooded when his kidnappers put a gun to his head."When the murderers were pointing a pistol at him, this man tried to take off his hood and shouted: 'Now I'm going to show you how an Italian dies'. And they killed him," Frattini said.
"He died a hero," he added...
- "I will die cheering, if I needs must die;
So shall my last breath write upon my lips
Viva Italia! when my spirit slips
Down the great darkness from the mountain sky;
And those who shall behold me where I lie
Shall murmur: 'Look, you! how his spirit dips
Form glory into glory! the eclipse
Of death is vanquished! Lo, his victor-cry!'
- George Edward Woodbury, 1916, The Italian Front
