Update to "The Call"

Posted By Blackfive

Details for the ladies: My friend, Kiang, was going to have to immediately move to New York. He works for Bank One and, since they were bought by JP Morgan (NY), he was told to pack up and move out. He left today. However, his bride had a big project for work and couldn't transfer to her company's branch out there to be with him for months. So, on a spur of the moment kind of thing, they decided to have a civil ceremony. Then, about 24 hours before the court appearance, the bride decided that she wanted witnesses at the ceremony. Having seen couples do this on the eve of one of them (the military loved one) heading downrange to war, I understand it.

All reasonable stuff. Kiang and Catherine are going to have a formal wedding later in the year. Catherine made a point to mention to me that it would a real wedding - complete with registry - and everything. The registry is the first thing Mrs. Blackfive asked about when this whole thing started.

The judge was really cool. The reception was here and the food was fantastic - well, except for the entire-stingray-wrapped-in-leaves entre and the fish heads floating in my soup, the dinner was really good. We had ten courses over 4 hours. Plenty of champagne, wine, etc. I like Penang better for Malaysian food, though.

I will try to any questions that you may have. Just post in the comments.

Details for the guys: I broke up some of the tension by telling this story at City Hall. Kiang's dad, a big 6'6" Malay laughed so loud that the judge asked us to quiet down. I also slipped the groom a little Johnny Walker Gold that I had in a flask (for medicinal purposes only). It seemed to help.

I made a great speech as Best Man. At least I thought it was funny, but I had been drinking. A lot. Then, I had to give three toasts in Malay. It was kind of like a grunted Yaaaaaaaaahhhhhh-Say!!! The 'yah' part builds in crescendo and the 'say' part was said fast. Kiang said it was a (kind of) Malaysian version of Siggy Saki, Siggy Saki, Hoy Hoy Hoy!.

Pictures will be available sometime soon.
