Heartbreak and Sorrow...Well, Sort Of.

What does it mean to be a Cubs fan?

I was trying to explain the Cubs fan phenomenon to some recent converts to the Cubs.

1. It isn't about the goat curse. I would bet you $1,000 that 75% of Cubs fans didn't even know about the "curse" until the playoffs. Nobody really believes in the curse, it's just a convenient excuse for why we can never get to the World Series. Because it could never be because we just suck that badly...

2. Give the Bartman guy a break. Why don't we blame the ump for not calling fan interference? It's his fault if you really want to blame someone...I saw Steve Bartman's neighbors on the Today show this morning. It made me sick.

Hey, Katie Couric, shut the f-ck up already. You are a New Yorker and you don't know sh-t about Chicago. Leave the Bartman kid alone. He doens't need your feigned *spit* sympathy.

3. Being a Cubs fan is about not giving up hope. No matter how bad things look, a true Cubs fan believes that Sosa will actually run after a pop fly, or that the batter with a .123 average will knock one onto Waveland Avenue, or that we can come back from a 12 run deficit...It's just that simple.

I will sign off by saying the perennial Cubs fan statement: *sigh* Oh well, there's always next year...Go Cubbies!!!
