Movie Review - Bend It Like Beckham

I saw "Bend It Like Beckham" the other day. I was tricked, I tell ya.

I wanted to go see "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" (OUATIM). Been a Rodriguez fan for ages. In fact, the first movie date my wife and I had was "From Dusk 'Til Dawn". Believe me, during the Cheech monologue, I was eyeing her reactions - hilarious. So I was charged up about seeing OUATIM.

We get to the theater and my wife made a mistake. OUATIM wasn't playing at the theater that we were at.

Mrs. Blackfive: "Oh, I wanted to see Bend It Like Beckham, anyway. Why don't we see it since we're here?"

Any husbands out there smell a rat? Not being an American soccer fan (I watch the occasional Manchester United game), and, especially not a women's soccer fan, I didn't expect much. I had heard great things from friends, but I really wanted to see OUATIM.

So I gritted my teeth and went to see it.

Big surpise, it was the best movie I have seen this year. Action (well, sports action), drama, lots of humor, good soundtrack, it had everything. The acting was very, very good (the coach was a little over-acted, but everyone else was spot on). The New york Times panned it, but after re-reading the review, I don't think their reviewer saw the same film I did. While it ain't Cassablanca or The English Patient, it is a fun movie.

Seriously, it's a great story about a women's soccer club in England and the prejudices surrounding the sport and cultures there. I am going to buy it when it is on DVD and you should definitely go see it.
